Accused rapist says wife has 'imagination'
July 9th 2011 02:21
A man accused of trying to strangle his wife with an electrical cord, raping her and jabbing her with a cattle prod in two decades of abuse has told a jury "the lady has an imagination".
Melbourne couple Zoe McLellan, 26, and Tim Hum, 33, said it didn't quite work exactly like that in their household.
He said he never wanted to kill his wife and denied raping and forcing her to perform oral sex, telling the court he was impotent and had no interest in sex.
Social analyst David Chalke said he was not surprised.
He also denied dragging her into the bedroom telling her to "get that fear out of your eyes bitch, have some faith in your husband", before putting a knife to her throat and ordering her to "start cooking".
There is still a hangover of traditional role division - he does the bins and gutters and she does the nappies.
Whatever, it is a sickness in our society which causes enormous damage, not just to our youth but, disturbingly, to those old enough to know better; the sorts of people who join bus tours to the Swan Valley with the sole purpose of getting drunk and falling down.
A lot of it is still ingrained after millions of years of evolution and it does not seem to be a source of stress.
